The
Typical Website Process
Each
web site is different and has its own set of challenging and
unque aspects. Below is a typical web site process from start
to finish. At Paul Kaufman Web Design, the client is personally
involved in the creation of their web site, and here is some
information on how the whole process works.
Create
Site Design
The first
step in the process is meeting with you to decide on the overall
goal's of your new site, as well as how the site will look
and function (how people will move within the website, and
so on). We incorporate your color and layout preferences to
create a winning design that will appeal to the eye and provide
high usability to your audience.
Domain
Name Registration
What
will be you web address? This is known as your uniform resource
locator, or "URL". Once you decide on a name (i.e.
www.yourcompany.com), Paul Kaufman Web Design reserves it
immediately and places a temporary page up on the Internet
with your contact information.
HTML
Coding
Now begins
the nuts and bolts of the website creation process. Using
a professional HTML authoring tool (Macromedia Dreamweaver),
we code (that is, create) the web pages on your site, matching
the design you chose. During this step, we communicate with
you regularly on progress and time-frame until completion.
Graphic
Design
This
step occurs as the HTML coding is going on. The graphic design
involves creating the graphics for your website, such as logos,
banners, buttons, stylized text, and so on. If you have included
a dynamic Flash movie in your design, that is developed during
this stage as well.
Hosting
When
your website is complete, you need to "place it"
on the Internet. That's where hosting comes in. You purchase
a hosting plan that gives you a "parking space"
on a server which is connected to the Internet. We offer a
number of hosting options
to accommodate your new website.
Post
the Site on the Internet
Once
you have reviewed your new website and tweaked any final items,
you are ready toit up to the world. We move your completed
site up to your hosting server space and now you are live!
However the process is not over. You still must register
your website with the search engines so they (and your
audience) can find your new site.
Maintenance
and Content Updates
A quality
website has information that is current and helpful. Depending
on the type of site you have, updating your site with fresh
content could happen daily, weekly, or monthly. We work with
you to make any changes to your site quickly and efficiently.
In many cases, you send us your new information and it is
added to your website and uploaded to your hosting space within
one day. As an alternative, we can train
your employees to update your site themselves (see below).
Training
Paul
Kaufman is a certified Lotus Notes Instructor and can offer
you various training scenarios
to help you update your own site. Training can be in a one
to one environment or classroom based. See

Search
Engine Positioning
This
is a critical step, and we encourage all our clients to include
it in their website package. With search engine positioning
do three things:
- Add
HTML "meta tags" to each of your web pages. This
helps search engines describe what your web pages are about.
- Create
"doorway web pages" that target key phrases you
want to score high in on search engines (for example, a
Charlotte Engineering Firm might have a web page on their
site with the phrase "North Carolina Engineering company"
occurring numerous times throughout the page. The result
is that this page will rank high on search engines where
a person enters that specific phrase (North Carolina Engineering
company).
- Lastly,
we register your site with the top search engines (Yahoo,
AltaVista, MSN, AOL, etc.) to give you maximum exposure
on the Internet.
Only
after you have used these search engines positioning techniques
can your website be found by the masses, and better yet, your
target audience. Without them, your website is indeed on the
web, but there is little chance that anyone knows it is out
there.
